While entirely fictional, the enigmatic concept knowns as The Force is based on some very real principles. In the movie, Star Wars, the Force is often spoken of by members of a religious order called the Jedi. The warrior-priests of the Jedi Order served as the main proponents of what they believed to be the core concepts of The Force. The concept and the order are fictional, but the principles by which the Jedi lived their lives are excellent guides to living one's life, especially amidst all the chaos of the modern world. For as long as the Dark Side of The Force is equated not to evil but to negative influences in one's life, the principles of the Jedi Code can easily be used to form a personal philosophy for living a good life, complete with a healthy mental attitude. Below you'll find the core principles of the Jedi philosophy, and some ideas on how they can be adapted to the trials and tribulations of modern life. There is no emotion; there is peace.Being able to control one's emotions was critical to a Jedi, as their tasks often required that they remain as objective as possible. Fear and anxiety can have negative effects on one's decision-making, which in turn can wreak havoc on one's life. By taking control of one's stress and anxiety, separating it from the tasks that need to be done, you can effectively find better solutions to your problems than you would have if you let your anxiety affect your analysis of the situation. This concept does not advise denying one's emotions, since doing so can result in more anxiety disorders and psychological issues than it solves. It merely says that people should let logic and analysis guide their decisions, not their feelings. There is no ignorance; there is knowledge. The Jedi Order espoused the determined pursuit of knowledge. To support the quest for enlightenment, they built a grand library that contained volumes of information on various topics and disciplines that were necessary to educate and train a Jedi. They also shared that knowledge, to better enlighten the same people they were attempting to protect. Many problems with anxiety and phobias can be alleviated if people just took the time to understand things. A little knowledge can help someone overcome the fear and anxiety that one encounters when exposed to a totally alien culture. In some cases, "anxiety disorders" can also be overcome simply by equipping one's mind with sufficient knowledge about the source of the anxiety, thus allowing a person to better understand and face the problem. There is no passion; there is serenity.Similar to the first principle, the Jedi believed that being too passionate about something was dangerous, as it could cloud one's judgment and objectivity. For people in their position, objectivity was critical in nearly all situations. The same can be said of pretty much anyone in the modern world. Emotions and passion can cloud our ability to make good decisions, as well as have an adverse effect on our ability to recognize our mistakes and correct them to avert further damage. Being calm amidst the face of an impossible bureaucracy can go a long way to keeping one's state of mental health stable and far away from going postal. As long as you don't let your "stress and anxiety" build up by dwelling on the negative, then your mind is serene and you can then make better decisions and take a clearer look at what is going on in one's life. There is no death, there is only The Force. The Jedi believed that when someone dies, they become one with The Force. This allowed them to see death not as a negative event, but merely a transition that one was inevitably going to get past. Adapting this to modern life, negative events can be portrayed as the death the philosophy mentions, with The Force acting as a metaphor for life itself. In other words, it is basically stating that, regardless of all the negative events in one's life, regardless of all the "fear and anxiety" , the nausea induced by corporate and familial duties, there is still life itself. To use one metaphor to explain another, if something bad comes your way, take some time out to stop and smell the roses. Your entire life will not be dictated by one car crash or an unfair termination. Life goes on and moves on, and so should you.Taking all of the above principles into account, it is difficult to see how they could fail to lead to a better state of mind, even amidst the chaos of modern life. That is, if they are followed like a personal philosophy and not taken as mere guidelines. Besides, if one espouses the opposite of the above principles, one is liable to burn out rather quickly.

Copyright 2006 Raymond BurtonCrazy toned and ripped six pack abs. That's the key to showing an awesome body. If you think that all training is about is making sure your chest is big enough to make your shirt hang out past your stomach then youre missing the boat. Chiseled abs are awesome abs.How do you get ripped abs? It's about diet, cardio and hard ab routines. I'll give you the low down on how to burn in some washboard abs with this killer ab routine and save the diet ramble for the main book Fat To Fit.First of all if your not training abs, start. That would be beginner ab routine phase one! Three sets of crunches for 20 reps a set. If that's not a problem then superset each set of crunches with a set of hip roles, followed by a brief 30 second rest to let the burn fizzle a bit.For hip roles you lie on the ground pushing down with your hands and raise your pelvis off the floor so the tail bone comes right up and squeeze the abs!Last step in the beginner ab routine is to add in some bridges or "planks" as some "guru's" of fitness have coined them. This is basically a pushup position but you don't rest on your hands, you rest on your forearms and just hold it for 30-60 seconds. Don't let your lower back sag! Keep a slightly inverted c posture like your trying to pull your hips toward your chin.So here is the ab routine once you are working all exercises together.Beginner "six pack" ab routine phase 1: Crunch x20 Hip roll x20 Bridge for 30-60 seconds Rest and repeat for 3 circuits or just keep rotating through! Alright enough of the easy stuff, we're here for some serious six pack abs, killer abs.Onto Ab Routine 2: The ab killer! I love pet names. This ab routine will all be done on the decline bench. The first ab exercise? Decline hip roll/leg raise. Beauty!Step 1: Put your head where your feet should beStep 2: grab the bench or the footholds; whichever is more comfortable (not that it will matter in a few minutes)!Step 3: Stretch out and do a straight-legged leg raises.Step 4: once at the top of the leg raise turn it into a hip roll so that you point your feet at the ceiling. Hold for a three count and go back down!Second six pack ab routine exercise: Incline sit-ups:Step 1: put your feet in the foot holds (you've turned around!)Step 2: Lower yourself until you're about a foot short of lying fully backStep 3: Come back up if youre still with me!Third ab routine exercise:Incline Russian twists (even sounds evil doesn't it?)Step 1: don't move out of the sit up position. Just grab a medicine ball or a 10- pound weight.Step 2: straighten fully your arms right to your front and lower yourself to the bottom position of the incline sit up and hold it.Step 3: Rotate to the right 90 degrees with your arms straight and then back to the left at 90 degrees. That's one rep. You don't come out of the bottom at all! Fun huh? Here it is ab routine layout:Leg raise/hip roll x20Incline sit-ups x20Russian twists x20 or 40 if you count both sides! No rest between ab exercises, and only 30-60 seconds rest after completing the tri-set.Third Ab Routine:And the grand daddy hardest ab routine ever? For mortals anyway? Because I remember something about homer Simpson and a cannon ball, but I think you need to have access to the applesauce bar for that ab routine to work!Well lets call it the "commando cardio ab annihilation" workout. I have to have a fancy name on it or you wouldn't be interested! It involves a pre-stretch, a contraction and dynamic stabilization (I just made that up, but you get the idea) exercise. Here are the ab routine exercises.1. Smith machine, Swiss ball hip rolls2. Partner resisted Swiss ball crunches3. Swiss ball rollouts4. Profuse sweating and clutching of the stomach.Ab routine exercise 1: Smith machine, Swiss ball hip rolls:1.Set the bar low in the smith machine, just below the top of the Swiss ball.2. Sit on the ball and roll out so that you have to reach back and grab the bar as you lie on the ball. You should be about 2-3 feet away, stabilizing your self by holding the bar and flexing everything!3. Using only your abs, stretch your pelvis down as low as it will go and then do a hip roll. Legs straight is the hardest.Ab routine exercise 2: Partner resisted Swiss ball crunches.1. Its a normal Swiss ball ab crunch but your arms are crossed across your chest and your "friend" pushes down on your shoulders to apply resistance. That's it,..ahem.Ab routine exercise 3: Swiss ball rollouts.1. Kneel on a pad with legs crossed ball in front of you not on the pad.2. Your hands are on the ball so it now looks like your praying.3. Roll the ball out until your straight as a board with your head between your arms and pull it back in.4. Profuse sweating and clutching of the stomach. This should come naturally. In a six pack ab routine all together?Smith machine/Swiss ball hip rolls x20Partner resisted Swiss ball crunches x20Swiss ball rolloutsx20Rest 30-60 seconds after each tri-set circuit or continue right through if you're a freak of nature or slightly "touched". I've never gotten 20 on all ab exercises on all three sets in a continuous circuit; let me know if you do!I'll have to buckle down!
There are a lot of new medications available today specifically for treatment of depression, anxiety, erectile dysfunction, obesity, among others. The good news is that there are new drugs that offer effective treatment for patients who suffer from these ailments. While research on the safety of anti-depression drugs has been quite extensive, the materials on the effectiveness and safety of anti-obesity drugs are not as comprehensive. In a recent study published in the United Kingdom, it was found out that patients taking certain anti-obesity drugs had an increased risk of depression and anxiety. Study also linked the drug to the development of thoughts about committing suicide. In another study involving Danish researchers who worked with 4,105 volunteer patients found that people taking 20 milligrams per day of an anti-obesity drug were 2.5 times more likely to discontinue treatment due to depressive disorders. The patients were also three times more likely to stop medication because of anxiety compared with those who only received a placebo. Many anti-obesity drugs being sold in different countries are actually still pending approval by many drug regulation agencies including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The reported increase of risk depression and suicidal thoughts associated with these drugs have made their chances of approval close to nil. Researchers from the University of Copenhagen believe that patients using untested and unapproved drugs would only see modest weight loss with many still remaining significantly overweight and obese. The researchers also found recorded several side effectsranging from dry mouth to headaches to depression in patients who used these slimming pills. To escape the possible dangers of using unapproved and untested anti-obesity drugs, some medical experts offer the option of undergoing bariatric surgery. Some of the surgical procedures used to promote weight loss include biliopancreatic diversion, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding, vertical banded gastroplasty. Gastric bypass is one of the most commonly used procedures in the United States, accounting for at least 140,000 operations done specifically for weight loss purposes. The said procedure has been in utilized for more than 50 years and, as such, has been sufficiently studied in the medical community. But what is a person who wants to lose weight already shows some signs of depression? The first step is to get support and encouragement from friends and family. At times, seeing a psychiatrist or a counselor may be necessary. It is also important not to set too high expectations in terms of losing weight. The weight loss program has often been referred to as a journey, and not a race. It takes time to lose weight and any rush to shed off unwanted pounds may have serious consequences in physical and emotional terms. Of course, no diet program will work unless a person engages in regular exercise. Physical activity immensely helps in burning calories. If a weight watcher strictly follows a good and balanced eating plan while doing regular physical exercise, there is no reason why he or she cannot lose weight.
When you feel like your beginning to breathe very rapidly and complain that your heart is jumping around in your chest, you may be experiencing panic attack. Such rapid pulse and shortness of breath of a "panic attack" can feel like a heart attack, and may signal a brewing heart trouble, a study of more than 3,000 older women reveals. Episodes of panic attack are frightening and may occur at random or after a person is exposed to various events that may trigger the condition. Based on the study, women who reported at least one full-blown panic attack during a six-month period were three times more likely to have a heart attack or stroke over the next five years than women who didn't report a panic attack. After taking into account other risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, inactivity and depression, researchers have also found out that emotional and mental health issues chracterized by fear, hostility, and anxiety which have been linked to previous research on heart problems, said study co-author Dr. Jordan Smoller of Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital.Postmenopausal women who are experiencing panic attacks may be a subgroup with elevated risk, Smoller said. She added that monitoring the health condition of postmenopausal women is critical to the reduction of the risk of cardiovascular disease. Monday's Archives of General Psychiatry published the study which wasn't designed to explain the link but speculated that a panic attack may trigger heart rhythm problems or that stress hormones released during an attack may harm the heart.Susie Rissler, 51, of Terre Haute, Indiana, wasn't a bit surprised by the study. She's been a panic attack sufferer since childhood who had already experienced three mini-strokes. You feel like the whole world is caving in, Rissler said of her panic attacks, which can include symptoms like racing heartbeat and chest pains. I've had shaking, sweating, curling up in a ball totally afraid to even look around. Panic attacks can really destroy a person in a lot of different ways, she said.According to Smoller, some of the reported panic symptoms such as racing heart, chest pain or shortness of breath, experienced as a "mental health" , may have been heart problems in disguise and may have been caused by an undiagnosed heart problem. One study doesn't settle a question, he cautioned. Smoller said that the number of events seen in this sample was still relatively small. From 1997-2000, the study enrolled 3,243 women and followed them for five years. Forty-one in the analysis had a heart attack or death from a heart problem. An additional 40 had strokes. According to Dr. Joann Manson of Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital who is not part of the team, though the weakness of the study may be its reliance on the women's memories, rather than doctors' diagnoses, it's more likely that the findings point to a real connection between panic and heart problems. It does tie together very well with what we know about the biology and physiology of the stress hormones, Manson said. I think it does suggest that this is something to discuss with your doctor, Manson said.
